About ISoP
ESOP/ISoP History
ISoP was founded in 2000 when the European society (ESOP) made itself international, actively seeking members worldwide and extending its conferences to other continents. ESOP had been born from a meeting in Paris in 1992 and its founding chairman was René-Jean Royer, eminent professor of pharmacology in his home-town of Nancy (France). An inaugural annual conference took place in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1993 and this was followed by annual meetings in France, the UK, Portugal, Germany, Hungary, Turkey and Italy.
Following on from René-Jean Royer, the society presidents were Ralph Edwards (Sweden), Giampaolo Velo (Italy), Nicholas Moore (France), Alexander Dodoo (Ghana), Hervé Le Louet (France), Sten Olsson (Sweden) and Mira Harrison‐Woolrych (New Zealand).
In 2001 the initial ISoP annual meeting was hosted in Carthage-Tunis, Tunisia, the first time the society had met outside Europe. Subsequent meetings have taken ISoP all around the world, from Buenos Aires to Tianjin and from Casablanca to Manila and many places between, in the process gaining a truly international membership. Some of these meetings were held beside the annual WHO meeting of countries participating in the WHO Programme for International Drug Monitoring. The society has always been open to anyone with an interest in pharmacovigilance.
The core beliefs of the European society – more support for safe therapeutics than just regulation, education particularly of young health professionals, and a broader consideration of pharmacovigilance – carried on to the international society, but greatly expanded both in terms of membership, activities undertaken, geographical locations covered and opportunities for specialist interest groups within ISoP.
In 2013 The Society celebrated the 20th anniversary of the establishment of ESOP (the European Society of Pharmacovigilance) – the fore-runner of ISoP.

ISoP 25th Anniversary Celebration – Cairo, Egypt
The International Society of Pharmacovigilance (ISoP) proudly celebrated its 25th Anniversary in Cairo, Egypt, during the ISoP 2025 Annual Meeting.
To mark this special milestone, ISoP created a commemorative video and shared the story of the Society during the ISoP 25th Anniversary Celebration held on Saturday, 25 October 2025.

The anniversary was marked in Pisa, Italy during the ISoP 2013 Annual Meeting and for this occasion a video was filmed during that meeting where the Presidents of ISoP presented the story of the Society.
